Project Background

This project involved the complete structural design of a 4-storey reinforced concrete residential building located in New South Wales, Australia. The client required a fully compliant structural design package to submit to local council for development approval (DA) and construction certificate (CC).

The structure consists of flat plate slabs, RC columns, and pad footings on a sandy soil profile. The design was governed by AS 3600-2018 for concrete structures and AS 1170 for load combinations including wind and seismic actions.

Design Methodology

Structural System Selection
Evaluated and selected a flat plate RC slab system with internal columns based on architectural constraints, span lengths (6–8 m), and serviceability requirements.

Load Analysis
Applied dead loads (self-weight + superimposed), live loads per AS 1170.1, wind loads per AS 1170.2 (Region A3), and seismic loads per AS 1170.4. Load combinations checked in ETABS.

3D Structural Modelling (ETABS)
Built a full 3D model in ETABS including all slabs, beams, columns, and shear walls. Performed linear elastic analysis and extracted design forces for each member.

Member Design to AS 3600
Designed slabs for bending (strip method), columns for combined axial and biaxial bending, beams for flexure and shear, and pad footings for bearing pressure and punching shear.

Serviceability Checks
Verified long-term deflection of slabs (span/250 limit), crack width control for durability classification N (external exposure), and inter-storey drift under lateral loads.

Drawing Production & Report
Produced structural drawings in AutoCAD including reinforcement layout, sections, and schedules. Compiled a full engineering calculation report reviewed and certified by the supervising engineer.
